I recently joined my local garden club and met lots of nice people who love to garden too. And now I am designing garden club websites (here is another) and responsible for the PR to get my McHenry Garden Club's news out.

2010 - Featuring My Vegetable Garden

This year I intend to have a great veggie garden again. For nearly 20 years I've been planting herbs and veggies. Now I am taking lots of photos and putting them here. Read my veggie garden stories and follow along this year in My Veggie Garden.

Sunflower Popularity

I've grown sunflowers for awhile now and I am still in awe over this beautiful specimen of nature.

Sunflowers are so popular now that I notice them all over the place - in vases and in paintings and prints on walls in TV and movie sets and elsewhere.

Sunflower buds form in mathematical precision using golden angles and spirals. The sunflower displays so well this obvious a sign of connections in mathematics and biology.

Sunflowers can seem like little people to me. Did you realize that they face the sun throughout the day. And they have faces, heads, and necks that "move". This is referred to heliotropisim, moving the flower head across the sky to follow the sun morning to evening throughout the day. How fascinating to observe this in your own yard!
